Honoring Those Who Serve

By Christy Rost, July 2006

During the long fun-filled days between Memorial Day and Labor Day, we have many opportunities this summer to celebrate family ties, neighborhood friendships, and the carefree joys of summertime. On the 4th of July, we celebrate our nation’s freedom with parades, picnics, and fireworks, and remember those who crafted and defended our nation and those who currently serve in the US military.

There are many ways to support our troops – with prayers, by flying the flag, writing to a soldier overseas, or visiting those who are recovering in VA hospitals. Inga Bowyer, president of GermanDeli.com, a Southlake, Texas online German food store for USA residents, is an energetic woman who’s found a novel way to show her support, and she’s rallied her employees to do the same.

When customers place an order destined for a soldier in hot spots such as Iraq and Afghanistan, Inga and her staff “soldier-size” it! When the soldier opens the box, they find a beautiful card with a handwritten message thanking them for their service, signed by all the GermanDeli.com staff. But that’s not all. The person who packs the box tucks in plenty of extra goodies free of charge – hence the term “soldier-size”. With over 3,000 items to select from, shoppers and soldiers are sure to be pleased. Here at home, summer picnics are hot, hot, hot, so keep cool with refreshing salads, chilled entrees, spicy barbecue, and thirst-quenching beverages. You’ll find a summer-full of recipes in easyentertain.com designed to make this the tastiest summer ever!
